Time Change, or a Time for Spring Cleaning Your Mind
Now that our clocks have sprung forward, we gain an extra hour of daylight. That’s an opportunity to do things we enjoy outdoors, walking the dog, riding bikes, or hosting a barbecue. The longer evenings also give kids more time to play outside. For some people, this season means gardening and planting annuals. I love to admire flowers and colorful yards, but I don’t have a green thumb (even my fake plants look worried when I walk by!). Instead, I look forward to something else each spring, spring cleaning your mind and home.
More Than Just Closets
In my house, spring cleaning is an ongoing debate. My husband is a pack rat, while I enjoy donating what we no longer need. Right now, I’m staring at a closet that desperately needs attention!
But cleaning doesn’t stop with garages and cabinets. Our thoughts and feelings can also become cluttered. Taking time for mental spring cleaning is just as important as clearing out old boxes.
Clearing Negativity and Finding Balance
Think of your mind as a crowded closet. Negative thoughts, old worries, and self-doubt can pile up. Imagine boxing them away, sealing the lid, and tucking them out of sight. Replace “I can’t” with “I can,” and put up an invisible No Vacancy sign for negativity.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) can help. SEL teaches coping skills, responsibility instead of blame, and the power of forgiveness. It reminds us to forgive others and ourselves when mistakes happen, making space for growth, peace, and joy.
Spring Is Here: The Best Time for Spring Cleaning Your Mind
March 20th is the official start of spring, but refreshing our minds and homes can happen any time of year. I’m grateful for longer evenings that allow me to walk outside and admire my neighbor’s flowers. My husband enjoys the extra daylight to tackle the garage.
And when the work is done, maybe we’ll both celebrate with a shamrock milkshake!
