The Importance of Self Control

If you live long enough, you learn that self-control is essential to accomplish what is most important in life. Not only that, but huge messes can also be caused by lack of it within relationships and society as a whole. There can be immense consequences when a person doesn’t control themselves and their emotions. It isn’t always easy to use, especially for kids who are more likely to let their negative emotions take the wheel. That’s why it is something worth discussing.

If a person doesn’t have proper self-control, then they could become intensely angry and attempt to use violent means to get revenge. They may put others in danger and possibly have them killed unnecessarily. That is what causes school shootings and murders: anger that isn’t properly controlled. If people like that had gotten help sooner and learned to manage themselves and their emotions sooner, things could’ve have been a lot different.

Control of emotions is also needed to manage relationships in a healthy manner and the conflicts that come with them. If we don’t control our emotions and focus on attacking the problem and not each other, feelings could be seriously hurt and core relationships can be damaged. Control of emotions is key to solving conflicts so both sides can express how they feel in a healthy manner instead of blaming the other person. Self-control can allow for listening and understanding so things can work out.

Self-control can also help you be better off financially. Lack of self-control can lead to impulse buys which may be fun at the time but can backfire. The more a person spends on unnecessary items, the worse off they will be financially. All the person will have to show for it is extra clutter. If we stay in control and limit our wants, then we’ll have just enough for our needs.

This also applies to our everyday eating habits. The more desserts and junk food that a person eats, the more their body will suffer. A person needs to stay at a healthy weight and not do much to jeopardize that. A disciplined person is willing to keep a healthy balanced diet, so they’ll feel good physically. The longer you keep this up, the easier it will be.

Speaking of controlling your health, being disciplined can help you focus on building your body with exercise. It can be easy to laze around or just not move along. Making yourself stick to a routine and workout in whatever ways you need can be a big step towards bettering yourself. Putting in the effort to improve your body and the abilities it has is worth it. You owe it to yourself to keep going and enjoy the results of your hard work. Self-control can also help break bad habits like drinking, smoking, too much social media, gossiping, biting and/or picking your nails, etc. If a person with any of these problems doesn’t change then they could do significant damage to themselves and others. The next right thing for your life is to make positive improvements for yourself for the sake of a brighter future. Making changes like these aren’t easy but continue to be worth it.

A lack of self-control can also cause someone to procrastinate often. If they don’t force themselves to accomplish what they know is important then there could be lasting consequences. Putting off cleaning your house could lead to it smelling bad, having bugs, having lots of dirt and a sink full of dishes. Pushing homework aside can lead to grades going down and being reprimanded by your teacher. That is why it is important to focus on long-term outcomes instead of short-term discomfort. The reward will make you feel fulfilled.

As you can see, controlling yourself to make changes isn’t easy but the outcomes will be too rewarding to ignore. Focusing on what you can control to make the right decisions can make things better if you try. We can learn from our past mistakes and focus on the future. Knowing how to move forward in a positive manner instead of causing extra damage is great for those involved. The more you avoid bad choices the happier everyone can be.
