What to Make of Valentine’s

Let’s be real, valentine’s day can be beautiful but let’s be real it can be very generic. The same classic heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and teddy bears lining a section of Wal-Mart year after year. Plus, not everyone is in the best circumstances to celebrate. There may be people who have gone through a recent breakup or divorce, others who are doing long distance or others may even be surrounded by friends who are dating, engaged or married and are still flying solo. If you’re in any of these situations, you’re probably looking for a way for this day to feel less sad or daunting than keep reading because there is hope.

Valentine’s day is a day of love and not necessarily just in the romantic form. It can be a real reason to celebrate every love in every form like love for your friends, family and yourself. This can be a great reason to show yourself some love even if no one else will. If we’re going to acknowledge a holiday, then we should do it right. So let’s focus on doing it right!

A great way to get through the day right is to throw a party. It can be fun hanging out with your single friends or you can kick it up a notch with dancing, great food and delightful conversation. If you want you could try to extend the invite to singles in your neighborhood. This could be a great way to meet new people and mix things up by bringing new people into your social group. Friendship and fun can make any day better. If you’re more on the introverted side and would like to keep things low-key then no problem. You can do something small like a trip to a museum, an art exhibit, a trip to a small café to give yourself something different and nice. On that note, you could always treat yourself to an ice cream cone. It can be a day to treat yourself and maybe do something different.

Remember what I said about self-love well I meant it. There is no reason not to give yourself a little TLC (tender loving care).  There is always the classic mani-pedi and face mask treatment. If you want to go all out then you can combine that with your favorite food and a movie or tv binge night. Giving yourself things you love is a great way to show yourself some love.

Everyone needs a little adventure in their life so why not explore someplace fun.  You could explore a nearby state park or explore a new area. If you’re feeling brave enough and have some extra change in your pocket you can go skydiving or check out the things to see and do in a foreign country. Trying a new hiking trail isn’t off the table in any of these places if you want to get your steps up and increase your heart rate. Treating yourself to some excitement could give you a new perspective (which could be an asset going forward).

I already said that family love can be celebrated on this day as much as any other holiday. Which is why I recommend bringing family into your plans. You can host a family gathering at one of your houses or you can bring them along to one of the activities on this list. They can bring fresh ideas and their presence can give you reasons to laugh and smile We bring family to our fun all the time when able why should this be an exception.

I hope that this can be a reminder that being alone doesn’t mean that you have to be lonely. It’s a chance to appreciate the right to live life without needing to arrange your life around someone else’s. You are able to live life the way you choose. There is no need to be jealous of anyone else’s happily ever after when you can move forward while blazing a trail of your own. So let’s make the most of this valentine’s.
