Lots of people know by now that emotional intelligence is important. It is essential to our social and emotional well-being for a variety of reasons. What everyday people may not know are the consequences of not having it. That is why I’m sharing this with you. After all, understanding why it’s important can help motivate a person towards self-improvement when needed.
If a person hasn’t developed their emotional intelligence, they may not be able to comprehend and understand the emotions of others. This means they may not fully understand the gravity and depth a situation has. They can’t manage a situation at work or in life if they don’t know what it is. Working with others means working with the whole person not just the parts that you like. This means that managing the hard stuff is something a person needs to mentally know how to do.
What is also important is managing the emotions within us. This means identifying them and understanding why we feel this way. Then we must make sure we control them that way we don’t start lashing out or having an inappropriate outburst towards others. When the time comes, we need to solve whatever is that is making us feel this way whether it means solving a social problem or calming ourselves down to accept what we can’t control.
If a person doesn’t learn how to control emotions like anger, for example they could blow up at people when they don’t have to or even resort to physical violence. If a person has a lot of repressed anger, they’re likely to take it out on someone else like a family member or a significant other in their lives. It can either become physical like this or it can become verbal to where they start yelling at a person until they get fed up or the victim can’t take it anymore. This is why a person needs to learn how to control themselves through therapy if necessary. If a person like you or someone you know is a victim of unbridled aggression they should get away and call the authorities however possible.

A person also needs emotional intelligence to be able to communicate well and resolve conflict. They always need to know how to take other people’s feelings into account to communicate properly. Otherwise, the person at the receiving end of what their saying might take it the wrong way and conflict could arise. Everyone needs to be able to communicate properly and in a healthy manner in order to accomplish things together that are worth being proud of. We can’t do that well without emotional intelligence.
Managing stress is also a vital skill that is made possible by emotional intelligence. A person needs to be able to manage their stress so they can handle life’s challenges without breaking down. Instead of panicking, they need to be able to relax and focus on the task at hand. Emotional Intelligence is what is required to do this so focus can be possible.
What is also necessary for a person is to understand the personal boundaries of others. Getting involved in other people’s personal affairs unnecessarily is considered rude. People feel the same way about the invasion of personal space which without their permission is considered disrespectful and inappropriate. A person needs to develop their emotional intelligence, so they’ll know not to cross any boundary lines.
This is why people need to learn to understand their emotions and develop their emotional intelligence. What can help early on is if they are guided to know what is and is not appropriate. What can help is if they’re guided through the SEL Curriculum that Resilience is more than willing to provide. It’s around 5-10 dollars depending on which resources are requested such as customizable animated videos, worksheets and exercises that can be applicable for all ages. Children can be educated at an early age so that they don’t deal with any of these problems unnecessarily. They just need a guiding hand.
